Jhangore Ki Kheer / Barnyard Millet Pudding / Sama Ke Chawal Ka Kheer

Origin – Uttrakhand

Jhangora is a millet found in the Himalayas. It is also known as Barnyard Millet in English and commonly known Sama ka Chawal.



Barnyard Millet – 200 gm

Water – as required

Sugar – 100 gm

Milk – 1.5 liters

Almond / Cashew nut / Raisin Chopped – 50 gm

Saffron – a pinch

Cardamom Powder – ¼ tsp


Wash the millet and soak in water for half an hour. Strain the water and keep the millet aside.

Boil the milk and keep stirring on low heat till the milk is reduce to half. Add the soaked millet and cook for 5 minutes. Add sugar and cook till sugar dissolves. Add the remaining ingredients and cook for another 2 minutes. Remove from the heat and serve hot or cold garnished with dry fruits.
